MFi stands for Made for iPod and means that an accessory has been developed specifically for the iPod and has been tested and approved by Apple. It is only applicable to electronic accessories that connect up with the iPod via its dock connector, found at the base of the iPod. This covers most speakers, chargers and connectivity products and excludes cases and most accessories that connect via the headphone port.Products undergo stringent testing to achieve the Made for iPod status ensuring that they are completely safe for use with iPod. Once a product has passed these tests, it is awarded the certification and permitted to use the programme’s logo on its packaging, offering peace of mind for the consumer that the product is compatible and fully safe for use with their iPod.

WWi is the iPhone equivalent of MFi, standing for Works with iPhone and signifying that same assurance that an electronic, dock-connecting product has been designed for the iPhone and fully tested and approved by Apple. The Works with iPhone tests take things one step further, making sure that the product has been suitably designed to avoid interference when the phone transmission is active. Highly skilled and careful product design is needed, to protect the internal components from irritating interference and ensure that you get the best possible experience from your iPhone.
If you use an iPhone with a non-WWI approved speaker you will be asked whether you want to use Airplane mode; no such message is displayed when using an approved WWI speaker.
